Design of suboptimal control in a problem with a degenerate payoff for the control signal

Abstract: Sufficient conditions are derived for existence of optimal control in a problem with a quadratic performance criterion with a degenerate payoff for the control signals. Properties of a sequence of suboptimal controls are studied that give an approximate solution to the problem.
