General birth and death processes and elementary stochastic models of epidemics

Abstract: The coucept of a general birth and death process is introduced. As the probabilities of state in the case of a periodic transition intensity matrix are studied. A way to find the extreme mode is described. For illustration, stochastic epidemics models are described as particular cases of the process.
