On equivalence of systems with large gains and systems with discontinuous controls

Abstract: Systems with large gains and systems with discontinuous controls whose slow motion and sliding mode paths, respectively, are not equivalent in terms of stability of the manifold which consists of these paths. Examples are given which show that replacement of an element with a discontinuous response by an element with an infinitely large gain in the vicinity of the discontinuity point is illegitimate.
